Can You Freeze Nuts?
last updated Tuesday 24th January 2012 - 17:35The answer to this is yes! Remove nuts from shells and place in a bag or container and pop in the freezer. When defrosted they are best used in cooking.
Nuts go rancid very quickly due to their high oil content so it is always best to buy them still in the shells to keep them fresh for longer. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Substituting nuts in cookery is possible, use pecans and walnuts instead. Hazelnuts and almonds interchange well.
Nut allergy is very common and can be life threatening. Avoid nut oil!
Peanuts are also known as groundnuts. Hazelnuts are sometimes called cobnuts or filberts.
Chestnuts should be cooked before being eaten as they contain tannic acid which tastes unpleasant!
