Organic Veg Box Review.

last updated Thursday 3rd March 2011 - 14:31

By Lancashire Lass

My weekly organic vegetable box arrives every Friday lunchtime in a cardboard box and appears just like the photographs you can see here. Whilst at the Cheshire Show in June 2009 my husband and I had come across the Riverford stand and having in the past considered the prospect of having a weekly vegetable box delivered, had very quickly signed up for one. The first was free and the second was half price and delivery was free so we thought, why not?

Here’s how it works:

There have a whole host of different sizes of vegetable boxes which contain veg or a combination of fruit and veg. Alternatively the buyer can select form a list, just as when doing an online supermarket shop. Riverford sell not just vegetables but meat, cheese, milk, wine etc.

Each week I receive an email from Riverford telling me what is going to be in the coming box. I actually rarely look at this! I prefer the excitement of bringing in the box each week and checking to see what has been left! As we only get the small box, we do still need to top up from the local shops.

We are now eating vegetables that I would not normally choose so it has widened our range, e.g. fennel and no doubt provided different nutrients, minerals and vitamins necessary as part of our 5 fruit and veg each day!

The veg arrives in a reusable cardboard box which is put out on delivery day. Plastic bags and other containers are returned also. Payment is via cheque or by paying on line with a debit or credit card.

A delivery note tells us of the country of origin of each product but much of it is grown locally. They say that only about 10% of food is imported. You can read up on how GREEN the company is on its own website.

I can alter my order easily on the website, adding or cancelling should we be away.

The food is always fresh and of good quality.

My only gripe is that I now get my hands dirty scrubbing carrots and potatoes!!!
