I wonder how many of you will be making pancakes for the family. Have you ever wondered why we celebrate this day with pancakes.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday which is the day following Shrove Tuesday and ends at Easter a period of forty days. It commemorates Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness, and Christians mark this time by a period of fasting.
Traditionally, Christians would go to church to confession, where they would confess their sins and were absolved from their sins. This day was known as Shriven or Shrive, which eventually over the years was shortened to Shrove.
On this day all households would use up food items in the home such as sugar, butter, milk and eggs, ingredients from which Pancakes are made and hence why they are made on this day, Shrove Tuesday.
Eggs would not be eaten again until Easter which was the 40 days that led up to the celebration of Easter.
There are so many alternatives to traditional sugar and lemon, savoury or sweet.
