Recycling is not a new phenomenon. It has been going on for hundreds of years.
Take a look in any old cottage or house. There is often evidence of doors having been used elsewhere, having been “reclaimed”!
Thriftiness was big back in Victorian times. Clothing was re-fashioned and when completely worn out, the fabric was used for dusters! Think of rag-rugs and patch work quilts!
"Make do and mend" was practiced by our mothers and grandmothers in the 40s when WW2 meant that there was a short supply of clothes and materilas.
Today recycling is encouraged so that we take care of the environment which we live in. With the economic downturn, it is natural for us to consider how to save wastage and money. Thriftiness is fashionable.
Being eco-friendly comes in many forms.
Now we too, are all encouraged to recycle and live in a less wasteful manner but the question I ask is:-
“How far do you go?”

Councils now supply us with boxes, bags and bins but there is so much more that can be done and save you money too!
- Recycle paper, cans, glass, plastics, metal, cardboard, garden refuse, batteries, water filter cartridges, hard core, ink cartridges, clothing, shoes, textiles, wood, mobile phones, etc, etc
- Buy furniture from charity or second hand shops.
- Buy clothes from charity or vintage shops.
- Use organisations like Freecycle to swop unwanted for wanted goods.
- Switch to Greenenergy suppliers
