Orchids

There are many different species of orchids or the true name of the orchid family is Orchidaceae which is one of the largest families of flowering plants

Through the centuries the orchid has been associated as a symbol of love, luxury and beauty and often used in medieval times as a remedy for illnesses as well as an aphrodisiac!

In the early 18th century, it was only royalty or extremely wealthy people who took an interest in this plant which was extremely rare and very expensive.

It was the botanist William Cattley who in the 18th century discovered this plant being used as packing for other plants.  He potted the plant and it blossomed producing a beautiful flower. It was later named after him the Cattleya and became a popular hobby with the gentry to have orchid collections, hence many societies have been set up since.

Orchids have become a popular house plant over the last couple of years, being pictured on coffee tables, mantelpieces in many of the homes that are photographed in various house magazines.

So much so that they are now widely available from all garden centres and supermarkets.

Tips on Caring For Orchids.

They love a moist atmosphere and suit sitting in the kitchen or bathroom sills, but in a living room a light misting every now and then will help, plus good light but not direct sunlight.

Feed once a month with orchid feed but don’t let them stand in water too long and don't water again until dry.

When the flowers have died off cut back the stem to 4inch and wait, they will flower again but it could take 4 or 5 months.

For those of us who profess not to be so good at caring for plants, do not feel left out!

You can always purchase Faux Orchids, many of which are extremely lifelike and of course can be situated anywhere in the home, with no worry of losing the plant!
