How To Bring The Birds Into Your Garden
last updated Tuesday 8th November 2011 - 20:07
Firstly you need three types of feeders:
One for holding peanuts and usually made of mesh, so the birds can peck at small amounts from the peanuts inside, and one for holding various types of seed.
The third one is a metal holder meant for fat blocks/balls (don’t leave the net on the balls, a hazard to birds feet)
What food attracts which birds?
Peanuts - favourite food enjoyed by the Tit family; Sparrows and Robins
Black sunflower seeds - favoured by Green Finches; Chaffinches; Sparrows and Tits.
Nyjer seed - one that is a favourite for Goldfinches.
Suet blocks/balls which contain mixed seed or dried mealworms loved by Great spotted woodpeckers and their young; Finches; Sparrows and Tits. Also favoured by Squirrels (explains the need for metal holders)
Other foods such as sultanas (soaked in water first) good for ground feeding Blackbirds
Mixed bird seed scattered under shrubs attracts Wrens and Dunnocks, who prefer to keep close to the ground.
Remember to feed throughout the year, it provides much needed extra food through the breeding season, supporting not just the adult birds, but their chicks as well.
