Springtime Gardening
last updated Thursday 9th February 2012 - 20:58
Let’s Get Started!!
Spring is literally around the corner. The air is warmer, the frosts are less, the spring bulbs are coming into flower, the weeds are GROWING and so is everything else.
Now is the time to take stock of what you want to achieve in your garden, this year, (if you have not already done so).
Consider the following:
Which plants need to be moved and to where?
Which plants have been killed due to the severe cold weather that we all experienced?
(If you have a small spare patch of ground, move the apparent dead looking plants there, they may grow again from the base.)
What do you fancy growing in your vegetable section? Try something new, there are several seed firms who have better, stronger, more prolific plants, this year.

Seed Planting in February/March:
Seeds suitable for planting in trays in your greenhouse/garden shed during Feb/March are:
Spinach; Peas; Carrots; Okra; Lettuce; Corn Salad (Lamb’s Lettuce); Celeriac; Cucumber; Peppers:
Save your egg boxes, the ideal holders for seed potatoes to allow to “chit”. There are many kinds to be bought, Isle of Jura; Blue Kestrel; Swift; to name but a few.
Plant some Earlies, this week, into a big tub filled with a bag of multi-purpose compost, add a couple of mint tubers, and keep in the greenhouse or a very sheltered, sunny spot, to enable you to have gorgeous new potatoes that melt in your mouth, as early as May.
The soil is drier and less likely to stick to your “wellies”, so get out there and start preparing the soil.
The “Gardening Year” has begun!!!
