Boden Wellingtons

Boden Wellingtons

I grew up knowing nothing else other than the plain black wellie! Around the winters of 1978/9 colourful wellingtons suddenly appeared in high street shoe shops. Wellingtons were now considered trendy if worn in red, yellow or blue.

Approximately another 20 years passed before wellies appeared with spots, stripes, flowers etc, in a multitude of colour. They are now sold in garden centres and by companies such as Boden.

I have been under the misapprehension that Hunters are what country folk wear! However, in 2008 Hunter brought out wellies for the “Festival” wearers. Great for wearing at Glastonbury and the like whilst enduring all that mud! What a great marketing idea that was!

Hunter Wellingtons are now very much in fashion. Hunters can be purchased on the high street in shops such as Office and Russell and Bromley. The traditional green is now accompanied by various other colours.

However, there are many styles available. Check out the Hunter website for styles, stockists and prices. The Hunter Story can be viewed on the website along with other useful information. There is a “Fitting Guide” which will help the buyer decide on style according to needs. Trousers and socks need to be taken into consideration when deciding what to buy. The boots fall into 4 categories, For Kids, For Work, For Fun and For Sport.

Hunter Boots can be found on the high street in OFFICE and Schuh. or buy online from Amazon.

A Short History of the Wellington Boot.

As the name suggests, these boots do have a connection to the DUKE of Wellington. He was a very fashion conscious man and had his clothes and footwear designed especially for him.

In the early 1800s, he had Hoby of St.James` Street, London make him a boot that was more durable for the battlefields but which was also stylish and comfortable. Being a trend setter many of the other men copied and the boots became known as “Wellingtons”.

In 1856 a Mr. Henry Lee Norris started production of boots made from rubber in Edinburgh. This was the fore runner of Hunter Boot Ltd.

It was not until the early 1900s during WW1 that they became the wellingtons that we know today, being suitable for wearing in the flooded trenches.
