How To Lay a Fire

The most important thing is to make sure that your chimney has been swept and the hearth is nice and clean. Your grate fits the hearth well to ensure that sufficient air can circulate. Roll several sheets of newspaper into tubes and twist. You can use magazines, although these can be difficult to light. Lay the twists on the bottom of the grate. To ensure that the fire will start you can also use firelighters. Use a couple of these dotted throughout the paper. Then criss cross your kindling wood, ensure that this is really dry. You can purchase kindling from most supermarkets, garages and D-I-Y stores. With all the snow we have experienced lately a sure way to dry out your kindling is to empty the string bag and store the sticks in a basket near the fire, next to your log basket. Add a couple of small logs to the fire. Light the fire and once the flames are growing steadily then you can add coal or some larger logs. If the fire is not drawing as well as you would like use a magazine or large newspaper and place over the front of the fire place, leaving a gap at the base for the air to draw in. Keep removing this to check the fire and to make sure that your paper does not set alight. For an open fire to make a difference to the temperature of the room, you need to light it about an hour before you want to sit down to get the full effect of the hea

How To Find Open Gardens

The National Gardens Scheme has been in existence since 1927, when it was established to raise funds for the Queen`s Nursing Institute. In 1980 it became The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust and to date has raised over £40 million for charity.
There are 3,600 gardens to be visited. Many of these are privately owned and open on a few days each year.
The ngs website has a quick and easy method of finding gardens in the area you are living in or visiting. Click on GARDEN VISITING on the list on the left of their Home Page
