The National Gardens Scheme has been in existence since 1927, when it was established to raise funds for the Queen`s Nursing Institute. In 1980 it became The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust and to date has raised over £40 million for charity. It currently raises around £2 million pounds each year.
There are 3,600 gardens to be visited. Many of these are privately owned and open on a few days each year.
The ngs website has a quick and easy method of finding gardens in the area you are living in or visiting. Click on GARDEN VISITING on the list on the left of their Home Page. Enter the postcode and distance you wish to travel. It will bring up a list of gardens with details for each one, inlcuding open dates, times and admission prices.
Gardens are also listed in a number of other countries, including Australia, United States and Japan.
There is also information on joining the scheme if you wish to open your own garden.
