Scarecrow Festivals

It is the start of the scarecrow festival season. Scarecrow Festivals are appearing in small towns and villages across the UK.
It is a great way for the communities to become involved with parents and residents of villages preparing to compete for the most original thought out scarecrow, be it appearing in the gardens, draped over walls or even hanging off rooftops!
Scarecrows have been a part of our agricultural history for longer than we may think.
Ancient Greeks created statues of Priapus, the god of farmers, beekeepers and vine growers were used as scarecrows.
The Romans copied this idea and brought it over when they conquered parts of Britain.
Centuries later the English created similar figures out of straw with heads made from turnips and gourds.
Many parts of the country have different terms for the word Scarecrow
Mommet – Somerset
Tattie bogle – Scotland
Bwbach – Wales

Moggy
Bird scarer

Did your parents never say 'Watch out for the Bogey Man!'
