How to save time-Time Management

last updated Friday 6th January 2012 - 21:33

I am always being told how organised I am and asked how do I do it all, looking after three children on my own, holding down a full-time job and study too??  When I sat and thought about it, I realised that it comes down to managing my time effectively. It soon becomes second nature so you don’t even realise you are doing it! My favourite tips for managing time are as follows:

  1. Get up 15 minutes earlier, you don’t miss it and will be amazed at how much you can get done in that short time.
  2. I keep a stair basket at the bottom of the stairs and anything to go upstairs is put into the basket and taken up in one go.
  3. I now put the dishwasher on when I leave for work rather than the night before as I used to get frustrated. I never had time to empty it before work – now I empty it whilst cooking dinner as I am in the kitchen anyway
  4. Pack all school / college / work bags / football kits / musical instruments, etc the night before and leave by the front door, ready to pick up on the way out.
  5. When going to work I make sure the kitchen sink is clear and wiped, this makes an amazing difference when you come in after a long day – try it you will be amazed!
  6. Set aside one day to pay bills online (I do this just after payday!) that way you access your account once to pay bills / transfer money.
  7. Plan menus for the week and write a shopping list accordingly.  I have used online shopping with major supermarkets and that does save a great deal of time but I feel every so often women need a trip to the supermarket (!) so I may do that twice a month.
  8. Lay all clothes out the night before, even my 9 year old daughter does this herself now!
  9. When ironing, I place clothes into piles so everyone can take their own pile upstairs into their rooms, odd socks go into a basket in the airing cupboard to wait for their mate.  These are sorted by my 9 year old for an extra £1 pocket money!
  10. Cooking / baking, I tend to do at weekends and will make double quantities and freeze for use later.

I am sure that people have many of their own tips for managing time / household but these are just a few to get you started, after all the more time we free up, the more time we can spend on ourselves!
