Adult Learning & Education
last updated Thursday 11th November 2010 - 11:46Returning to school, college or university is not just exclusive for children, we all have learning opportunities in many venues close to where we live.
Local Further Education colleges are the usually the first point of call, they generally hold classes at the main campus and sometimes make use of outreach centres and schools within the community. But did you know that universities usually have a Lifelong Learning or Community Education department that will offer courses for adults?
Then there are the libraries, often delivering short courses in their venues especially around IT, Local History or Creative Writing, in some areas the Local Authority also provides education opportunities for adults wishing to keep their brain active! Libraries are usually the best source of information on adult classes as they generally hold all college prospectuses and further details, but check out your local newspapers as major colleges will advertise in those closer to September, they may even hold an open day/evening for you to gain advice.
What about the range of classes on offer? Well the spectrum is huge, whether you are studying for interest – maybe an Italian class to help you on your holiday, catering to impress the husband or IT to help you research your family tree or whether you wish to update your qualifications with a current Food Safety or First Aid certificate or earn credits towards that degree you’ve always wanted to achieve – the possibilities are endless.
If you don’t want to or are unable to attend classes there are courses that you can pursue in the comfort of your own home such as Open University courses, Learndirect courses etc. Be aware that this type of learning does need a certain level of dedication and may not suit all learners…..personally I like the friendship developed in the classroom, learning with others and getting away from household chores for an evening or few hours during the day!
So instead of making a New Year’s resolution next January, do it now! Why not get down to your local college / library etc and find out what’s on offer, you may be pleasantly surprised!
