Women's Fashion Tights
last updated Tuesday 20th September 2011 - 17:05Women's Thoughts are always interested in the origin of an item and why they become so popular. Fashion tights in a women's wardrobe is a must this winter so we have provided a short history of why the tight was introduced into our lives.
The wearing of tights goes back several centuries, when they were worn by men. They were made for practical reasons when riding horseback, but became a male fashion statement in the time of Henry VIII of England. The material for nobility would be silk or fine wool, which was often padded around the calf under the hose to give the impression of a fine tuned leg!
Queen Elizabeth 1 was presented with a pair of knitted black silk stockings by her “silk woman” and admired their softness so much was reputed to wear only silk stockings for the rest of her life.
Silk stockings were expensive and the average women could not afford to wear them on a daily basis.
It was only when the length of women’s skirts altered and the invention of nylon in the late 1930’s that women were able to show off their legs more.
American women call the finer denier tights “Pantyhose” it is generally only once it has reached a 40 denier that they call it tights. Women in Britain do not differentiate.
Because the fabric used in tights is made of interwoven fabric such as nylon or cotton there are pores in the fabric where modern manufacturers have been able to place other items which benefit the skin. Certain techniques are available to place substances such as moisturizers and other skin creams in the tights. These creams are said to act against the skin to create a health and/or beauty benefit for the wearer. Some manufacturers have even put caffeine in tights which they claim can reduce cellulite for the wearer.
Hence the article in Daily Mail called ‘Ceullilte busting tights that melt fat away with crystals’.
