Where Were You on 9/11 Day?

posted 8th September 2011 @ 12:27

This week we were contacted by a local newspaper which was looking to find someone who lived in the area and who may have some tenuous connection to the 9/11 disaster for their story.

10 years has passed since that dreadful day, yet this week there are so many programmes on the television about how people have coped since the disaster, re runs of shows explicitly capturing that fateful day.

We were living in USA in a small town called Lanoka Harbor, Ocean County 80 miles south of New York on the coast.

That morning the children went off to school as usual and my husband went off on an appointment to see clients close to New York, in an area called Hoboken.

I was busy tidying the bedrooms, putting on the washing sorting out the dishwasher, when my husband called, telling me to put the television on.  He had heard on the radio that one of the Twin Towers had been hit.  The whole event seemed surreal, watching this building burning, which only three weeks previously we had all stood at the top of, doing our usual sightseeing jaunts with friends from UK.

Then the next moment the second tower was hit and we heard that the Pentagon had also been a target.  Listening to the presenters of these TV stations talking in gasps as we all watched in disbelief at the event taking place.

In all this chaos, I still took the dog for a walk to the shore, sitting on the sand wondering if this was the start of another World War.

We lived in an area close to a Nuclear Power plant.  Would we be one of the next targets?

In that short space of time, would my children get back from school, would my husband be able to get home before the next disaster.  Would we all be together?

We had moved to America that April to start a new life, yet all I felt was that I wanted to grab all my family and return to our home in the UK.  Go back to our homeland and feeling safe.
